Why Acupuncture Treatment Has Been Effective In Solving Health Issues

Acupuncture treatment is a controversial way of attempting to treat pain and illness by inserting needles into the skin at defined meridian points. These treatments can often be augmented by the use of herbs, which give the body a milder dose of the active ingredient found in many drug treatments. The herbs are milder and safer to use, despite the attitude of some governments throughout the world who seek to denigrate herbal medicine and promote the synthetic alternative. Tests are ongoing to establish how effective this age old form of medicine is, but results are hard to quantify accurately.

The uses of acupuncture range from reducing immediate pain to promoting fertility within barren women. In every case, there are many people claiming success from the therapy. What is never known is how much of this success is due to the treatment and how much to the placebo effect and the power of the human mind. To the sufferer relieved from an illness, there is little difference. They are just grateful for the seeming miracle which has happened in their lives, but the inquisitive mind demands more.

Some of the most extraordinary cures have come in the cases of women who were unable to conceive suddenly finding themselves pregnant. Some of these cases have even been major press journalists, who have been able to relate their story to millions of other hopefuls. Although the effect could still be the result of a placebo, the subject undergoing the treatment often reports feeling a shift in energy. The most likely scenario is that there is a genuine energy block within the system which is removed by the acupuncture treatment.

Although there is a definite positive side to these treatments, whether through intent or a placebo, there is inevitably a downside as well. Acupuncture therapists do not have to be centrally registered in order to practice, so you will need to carry out comprehensive research before you commit to a course of treatment. The law is strict that needles used in acupuncture must be either brand new of at least freshly sterilized, but this is hard to police unless a practitioner is reported. There are injuries and even deaths reported every year as a result of acupuncture treatment.

The way that acupuncture treatments work is still not fully understood by medical science. In fact, the energy which is supposed to course through the body is even dispute by many in the medical profession, who doubt the efficacy of the discipline altogether. While there are no scientific instruments which can measure this energy, there is no doubting that there are thousands of people who claim to have been helped by this type of therapy. The Chinese system of medicine, and indeed their overall philosophy, is so different from anything seen in the West that more education and research will be needed. This research is ongoing, but it needs to be more detailed, and the results need to be collected more effectively.

Although it is possible to reduce the risks involved with acupuncture to an extremely low level, it is never going to be possible to eliminate them entirely. Any time that skin is going to be pierced by anything, there is always a risk of infection. This risk is greater if the needles are going to be inserted in sensitive areas of the body. It is not, however, infection which has proven to be the greatest risk with this type of treatment, but nerve damage. The areas on the body into which these needles are inserted are clearly defined, so if nerves are in the area there is always a slight risk.

This risk which is inherent in acupuncture treatments can provide an incentive for people to look into other possibilities. There are many aspects to Chinese medicine, covering everything from diet and exercise to complex methods of treating specific illnesses. The system which relates most to acupuncture, and relates very closely indeed, is acupressure. This is a very similar technique which uses the same meridian points of the body, but there is no insertion involved. Because the skin is never broken, and the points are only subjected to pressure, this is safer system of medicine. As of now, more research is needed to demonstrate how effectiveness is affected by this.

You can reduce the risks involved with acupuncture treatments to the lowest possible level by doing your research in advance. There are practitioners who have been successfully using acupuncture for many years, and some of these have been trained by previous generations of the same family. There is no substitute for genuine knowledge and experience, so someone who comes from a long line of trained acupuncturists is going to be a far safer bet than a newcomer who studied out of a book. Use an experienced practitioner, i.e., an acupuncturist for your acupuncture treatment.
